How I Teach Punk Rock
Someone once told me that punk rock was all about attitude. I think that's true. However, even if you have all the attitude in the world, you still have to know at least a little about chords and rhythm to play punk.
Punk songs usually use power chords. Power chords are easy to learn. Punk is also usually fast -- you really have to get that strumming hand moving. There are some speed and accuracy exercises that help with that.
The most important thing that you need when you want to learn punk is the self discipline to make yourself practice the guitar in the first place. There seems to be this overpowering "who gives a crap" attitude in punk rock, and you just can't have that attitude toward guitar practice.
It's hard to imagine someone from a band like The Misfits or the Sex Pistols sitting down and practicing chords and exercises. The fact is, at some point every crazy punk rocker had to pick up their instrument and actually learn to play before they ever got into a band.
