About My Guitar Lessons (Classical)

How I Teach Classical Guitar

I use the Aaron Shearer method of classical guitar instruction. Aaron Shearer is a well known name in the field of classical guitar. My own classical training comes from Towson State University in Maryland. I studied under Michael Decker and Mary Ingles. Both of these professors were students of Aaron Shearer. So that's the style I use.

While most other styles of guitar playing welcome personal interpretation, classical leaves relatively little room for this... at least during the first few years. It is the most "strict" style of guitar playing.

The most important aspect is the position of the right hand, specifically the way the hand "hovers" over the strings, and the way the fingers pluck the strings.

We begin with simple songs from the Shearer lesson books, then progress to more involved pieces. I also recommend lesson books and videos by Ben Bolt. He has a lot of terrific educational material on the market.
