About My Guitar Lessons (Country)

How I Teach Country

I break up country music into three categories: The old country (Hank Williams Sr.), 70s & 80s country (Hank Jr. & Alabama), and the new country that emerged since the mid 90s. I played in a band that used to back up one of Hank Sr's first lead guitarists (Bob McNett). I learned a lot about country music during those two years.

For all types of country music I teach the basic chords and strum patterns. After that I teach how to use a capo (there's not much to that) and also how to tune your guitar to the Nashville rhythm tuning (G string up an octave).

For country style lead I teach the same scales as I do for any style of lead guitar. The difference is that with country music there is a different set of licks that you use for leads and fills.
