How I Teach Lead Guitar (Page 1 of 2)
I love playing lead guitar. It's my favorite part of playing guitar. I break up lead guitar in to two catagories... improvising and parroting.
Improvising is creating a solo on the spot... knowing what chords the band is playing, and playing a solo that fits not only the chords of the song, but the feel of the song as well.
Parroting is playing a solo just like it sounds on the CD. This is also an extremely important part of playing "lead guitar". Some songs have a guitar solo that people really like to hear. Some examples are the solos from Lynard Skynard's "Free Bird", Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" and The Knack's "My Sharona". Yes, lots of guitarists will improvise these solos, but you'll almost always get a better response when you play the "real" solo.
For both of theses styles I teach a bunch of scales and exercises. Please read on...
